Are dental extractions painful?

Our priority is to carefully extract any teeth that need to be removed as safely, effectively, and comfortably as possible. Before the extraction process begins, a local anesthetic is always injected into the gums near the tooth to completely numb the area. You will likely feel a little pressure on your teeth at some point during the treatment, but it should not be painful or uncomfortable. Our office will also provide you with aftercare instructions to help manage any pain and discomfort once the numbness wears off.

Can I go back to work or school after a dental extraction?

Removing a tooth is considered oral surgery, so we always recommend that patients take the remainder of the day off to rest and relax after having a tooth extracted, especially if oral conscious sedation was used during the visit. Your recovery time will also depend on which teeth are removed and how many teeth are extracted at once. Over the next couple of days, you will still want to take it easy and stick to eating soft foods that require very minimal chewing. Too much activity too soon can disrupt the healing process and cause complications.

How can I avoid needing a dental extraction?

At Buckner Terrace Dental, we want our patients to keep their natural teeth as often as possible, and we know our patients feel the same way. To keep your natural teeth in tip-top shape, we recommend practicing good oral hygiene at home and visiting our office regularly for cleanings and exams. Other preventive services like dental sealants, fluoride treatments, and custom mouthguards can go a long way in protecting your smile as well. However, there are some cases in which a dental extraction is inevitable. Our judgment-free team will be more than happy to provide you with the services that your smile needs.
