Dental Implants vs. Dentures

Losing teeth – even just one – can have a big effect on your life. It changes how you speak, what you can eat, and how you look. But thanks to modern dentistry, you have a handful of tooth replacement options. Dental implants and dentures are two of the most popular. In this blog post, we discuss how they stack up against each other.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are made up of a titanium post and an accompanying tooth replacement (either a crown, bridge, or denture). The post is surgically implanted in your jawbone. As the area heals, it fuses with the bone. Then, the tooth replacement goes on top. Dental implants are unique because they’re the only tooth replacement that also replaces the root of your missing tooth. This preserves your jawbone density. Additionally, you care for dental implants just like your natural teeth!

Dentures

Dentures are made from an acrylic base and artificial teeth. Full dentures replace an entire arch. Unless they are stabilized with implants, they are held in place by strong adhesive. Partial dentures can be used if you’re only missing a few teeth; these clip onto your neighboring natural teeth. To clean your dentures, you’ll need to remove them.

Implants vs. Dentures: Which Is Better?

There are pros and cons to both implants and dentures. Implants last longer (15+ years), look and feel more natural, and preserve your jawbone. Dentures tend to be more affordable, are less invasive, and don’t require certain jawbone density.
