With the ability to keep patients calm and content during treatment, dental sedation has helped countless people get the oral healthcare they need and deserve. You may be wondering though, what does it actually feel like to be under sedation? The answer varies depending on what type of dental sedation you get. Yes, there are multiple different kinds!

Nitrous Oxide

Commonly referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is classified as a mild form of sedation. With this type of dental sedation, a mask is placed over your nose and then you breathe in the calming gas. As it takes effect, you’ll start to feel more and more relaxed. Your limbs may start to feel heavy or tingly. While under the influence of nitrous oxide, you’ll remain conscious and able to respond. When the mask comes off, you will experience no lingering effects of the medication.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is considered a moderate level of dental sedation. For this option, you take a prescribed pill a certain amount of time before your appointment so that when it’s time for your treatment, it has taken full effect. While under oral conscious sedation, you might feel such a deep state of relaxation that you start to slur your words or fall asleep. You also may not remember much of your procedure. For your safety, we require that you have someone drive you home after your treatment.
